Language Arts Division Information
Language Arts Programs Support Your Academic & Career Goals
The Language Arts Division houses five academic departmental programs designed to help you meet your academic and career goals. All our departments offer student scholarships to enable your continued success.
Communication Studies offers transfer courses in interpersonal communication, public speaking, intercultural communication, and argumentation. Students in the Forensics Program regularly compete in local, state, and national competitions (with their travel expenses paid) and often bring back first and second place trophies.
The English Department offers a wide breadth of composition and literature courses that serve to meet your general education requirements, transfer needs, and interests. We offer British, American, Asian-American, and children’s literature, film, sign language, creative writing, and screenwriting courses. You also have the opportunity publish creative writing, pictures and drawings in the Sole Image Magazine.
English As A Second Language provides a wide range of courses designed to improve oral and written fluency in English. The faculty members are highly supportive of all student efforts, and their appreciation is evident in an end-of-the-year potluck that features cuisine from all over the world.
English/Reading is a unique blend of reading and writing courses designed to enable success at the transfer level. Study Skills at both the developmental and transfer level and critical thinking and writing courses are also available, often in an online format. Computer classrooms are used extensively for the English/Reading writing program.
Foreign Language offers courses in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, and Japanese. The Japanese Program, one of the strongest among colleges in the area, also gives students the opportunity to study anime, manga, and film. Students are encouraged to participate in study abroad programs taught by Cypress faculty members in locations such as Mexico, Spain, Italy, and France.
