About Professor Kaufman

Greetings! My name is Bret Kaufman, and I’ve been teaching at Cypress College since Fall 2016. After completing much of my undergraduate work in History with a Minor in Religious Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, I changed paths and earned a B.A. in English with an Emphasis in Creative Writing and a Minor in History from California State University, Northridge while I tutored International Students in English. Soon after that, I earned an M.A. with Distinction from CSUN as well while I trained to become a college instructor and taught for College of the Canyon’s Community Based English Teaching (CBET) Program. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of teaching at various colleges and universities throughout Southern California, including MiraCosta College, Orange Coast College, Irvine Valley College, UC Irvine, Soka University, and California Lutheran University. Over the years, I’ve developed a Global Citizenship Education framework that informs everything I do and hope to do as an educator. Currently, I’m pursuing a Ph.D. in Education and Social Justice through Lancaster University. My research explores the ways in which locally-situated yet globally-oriented service-learning-based course content enhances critical thinking, fosters unity in diversity, empowers individuals to become agents of positive and constructive change, and leads to social and economic development and justice. Being an educator has been one of the most humbling and transformative experiences of my life. I get to work with some of the most amazing individuals, and we’re always learning and growing together. I look forward to working with you to facilitate in your own transformative experiences and to doing whatever I can to help you succeed and thrive both in and beyond the classroom!
